Ocean Talent Camp

Now is the time to find the talent that will be needed in Norway’s Ocean Industries in the coming decades.

Recognizing this, the Ocean Talent Camp recruitment drive is going all out to attract young people to careers in these sectors. The collective term for the three biggest contributors to the Norwegian economy, the Ocean Industries refer to the shipping, offshore energy and seafood sectors. In years to come, these industries will need a massive amount of talent.

Nor-Shipping 2015 will host an installment of the Camp at Oslo’s City Hall Square from June 1 through June 4. Since its launch at Nor-Shipping 2013, just over 25,000 young people have attended Ocean Talent Camp. Youth from Ålesund, Bodø and Bygdøy in Oslo were able to experience the Ocean Industries during a phenomenally successful Ocean Talent Camp roadshow. The Camp is also set to go to Trondheim and Bergen after Nor-Shipping 2015.

Nor-Shipping Director Vidar Pederstad explains the rationale behind taking the Camp countrywide, “We need to wake up now more than ever to show young people how much these companies have to offer.”

Interactive and hands-on
There will be daily drop-in events for school classes from the greater Oslo area, when students will get the chance to talk to people who work in professions they are interested in, whether they are navigators, engineers, geoscientists or production managers.

They will already have received an educational support package with tasks to complete during their visit. Back in the classroom, they will be able to work on projects based on their experience at the camp. Interactive hands-on activities on and around the hi-tech exhibitor stands are part of the Ocean Talent Camp experience.

“One thing we have learnt since Ocean Talent Camp started in 2013 is that it’s never too early to start telling young people about the fantastic opportunities that the Ocean Industries have to offer them in the future. And how else are we going to secure the talent we need in 10 years’ time?” says Pederstad.

But the Camp is also not just for scholars, students and teachers. Everyone, from politicians to the general public, is welcome. Students and teachers will be present from June 1 to June 4, 9:00-15:00.

The official opening of Nor-Shipping 2015 itself will take place at Ocean Talent Camp on June 1 at 19:00.
